From this point on the articles in this “I Need Help With My Blog” series on Blog Consulting will assume you have a domain name, a web host, and are using WordPress as your blog software.  I will start a new blog to use as an example for how to start your own blog.  The blog has a domain name and is web hosted and I have installed WordPress.  Right now the site looks like this:

I am starting this site with the intention of selling it.  I guess you could call it a spec blog.  I have a website called Blogs for Sale where I sell these spec blogs.  Why would someone buy a blog when they could just start their own?  Blogs take a long time to develop.  You can start a blog in a few days, but it takes a lot of time and effort to get a blog to start showing up on search engine results.  A blog that has been on the Internet for a year is easier to get noticed on search engines.  If you can save someone a year of time and effort you have a commodity worth selling.  I have an idea that blogs about Alternative Energy will be popular in the near future.

What do you do with your blog when you start?  Here is all I want you to do.  Login to your new blog and enter in your Username and Password.  Go to the Settings tab and then go to the Privacy tab.  Make sure your privacy tab is set to allow your blog to be visible to everyone, including search engines.

Now I want you to go to the Permalinks tab.  You need to change the permalink from the default setting to a custom setting.  Click on the Custom circle and enter /%postname%/  This is a much friendlier search engine link.

Now, write your first article.  Make it 200-400 words about what your blog will be about.  That’s all for today.  We have a lot of other things to do with your blog.  Writing this first article will be the first step in the process of having Google index your blog (sometimes it takes a while for Google to index or find your blog, writing the article starts the process).

Blog Consulting – Part 2

Posted by: stephenlawes | Comments (0)

I will be doing a little blog consulting as I write this article.  We are going to have a little discussion about SEO (search engine optimization).  We started the Blog Consulting site five days ago.  We wrote the first article on July 4th (instead of fireworks I thought starting a blog would be a good way to celebrate Independence Day).  Blog Consulting is a very competitive keyword.  There are a lot of sites that are well established and linked on the first several pages of returns.  One of the Blog Consulting sites also produces WordPress themes, and one of the themes is actually used on WordPress.com.  That site has 124,000 links pointed at it.  I don’t plan  on competing with that site.  I would settle to get in just below that site.  Here is what is funny for today.  This brand new site with only one article on it is showing up at the bottom of page 2 in position 20.

The site shouldn’t be there yet and it is just one of those things that happens temporarily with new sites.  Don’t get me wrong, it would be great if it was that easy, but it’s not.  The Blog Consulting site will move backwards and might even disappear from the search results for a while.  This is what is commonly known as being in the Google sandbox.  (It is called that because Google doesn’t like to let the new sites play with the established sites).  So, for today, this 4 day old site is showing up on page 2.  That is why I took the screenshot.  It might be a long time before it’s back on page 2 again, but I am confident that I can get the site onto page 1 somewhere over time.
