Our latest blog consulting project was to design and develop an interactive site for Tower of Praise, Inc and their encourage2 ministry. The goal of the site is to encourage people to get involved in the Ministry of Encouragement and to utilize the Internet to help get all those involved connected. We decided to use the Thesis theme for the site, which allowed to to keep the design fairly simple and yet have a lot of great tools at our disposal to provide information.

We added video widgets from Vimeo, a podcast player from Sermon.net, and a few other bells and whistles. We also started a feedburner account to help people subscribe to the site and get daily updates about what was happening in the encouragement ministry. Future updates to the site will include adding a Page that tries to keep track of the impact the ministry is having by tracking where Impact Cards end up around the country. This is what the almost completed site looked like as it made its debut this week:

Another day, another website at Blog Consulting. This time we are building a site for an ice cream shop. This site needs a simple start with a good SEO foundation that we can develop in the future. I wanted a look that would tie the site in well with the actual shop. The ice cream shop has yellow walls with splashes of primary colors all over the place and a floor with tiles that have the same yellow, red, green, blue look. I also wanted to use a banana split that would sit behind the website and just kind of poke out as a reminder of what the website is all about. I initially was going to use Thesis to lay the site out, but then decided it would work well with the Twenty Ten theme. That is the second time I have picked the Twenty Ten theme in the last three builds. Here is a screen shot of the front page (I had to use a wider screen shot than normal so you could get a good idea of the colors, so the fonts will be a little small):

I got pretty creative with the yellow polka dot background. I was hoping to find something that would work on Google Images but I couldn’t find a good match. I ended up using a logo creator and overlaying the dot patterns onto the background. If you look closely you can see that they are all a little bit different as far as position and spacing. It worked out fine, however, as you would really have to be looking to see it. The ice cream shop is called Shirleys Frozen Custard, but I decided to build the site on floridakeysicecreamshop.com to gain a little SEO value. I pointed the Shirleys Frozen Custard URL to the Florida Keys Ice Cream Shop site. Go and check it out if you get a chance. I still have to input the info for a couple of the menu pages but other than that it is close to finished.

When I am building a blog or website, I often want to incorporate all of the latest bells and whistles into the site. Flash and slide shows, picture galleries, videos, etc. all intended to maximize the experience of people visiting the site. There are occasions (a lot of occasions), when the best thing to do is keep it simple. I just finished a site at ww.floridakeyselectricalcontractors.com for my newest Business Blog Consulting client. At this time, what they wanted was a simple, professional looking website, that would represent their business well. They had come to me me after a bad experience with another web company. Besides a new website, they also needed me to start developing online marketing strategies to help bring some organic traffic from the search engines to their website. Like a lot of businesses, their existing domain name didn’t offer them any help as far as search engines go. We picked a new domain name to anchor our SEO strategy and then pointed their existing domain name to the site.

In building the site I decided to use the WordPress Twenty Ten theme. This is about as simple as it gets. I added a Contact page, a Services page, and a new Home page. I used the existing About page and added some content about the company. I set the site as a static website, and installed the new Home page. I did a Google search for images about electricians at found three that I thought would work nicely. I took one of them and designed a new header and uploaded it to the site. I took the second image and made a nice Contact widget for the sidebar. I took the third image and used it to fill out the home page and linked it to the Services page.

I spent more time than I should have tinkering with the code to make the nav bar appear to light up when you went to click on a page. I thought this would be a nice touch for an electricians website. This would have probably gone a lot faster if it hadn’t been really late at night while I was tinkering. So, here is the new site for Florida Keys Electrical Contractors:

I always enjoy doing an SEO experiment here on Blog Consulting. This experiment will actually follow the progress of some websites I am developing for a client. The experiment will attempt to determine if there is a measurable difference between using subdomain sites and sites built on URL’s with a hyphen. The actual experiment will be between miami.skydivingflorida.net (a subdomain site) and skydiving-miami.com (a site with a hyphen in the URL). I have had some success in the past using subdomains when I couldn’t find a decent URL to build a site on. I have stayed away from using domain names with hyphens in them, because somewhere along the line I had read that they had a negative impact on SEO (the reason for this is that there are a lot of spammy sites that are built on domain names with hyphens, however there are also a lot of excellent sites built on hyphenated domain names). Then I watched this video by Matt Cutts who is a lead Google engineer. Watch the short video below:

After watching the video, it looks to me like the hyphen in the domain name is not an issue, so it is a good time to run an experiment and see which type of site works best. I will be careful to build the sites on the same theme and point the same number of links at each site. I will also put the same amount of content on each site (not duplicate content), and I will link to both sites as Miami Skydiving and Skydiving Miami. If the site with the hyphen works for SEO, this will be very helpful when there are not good domain names available for building new sites in competitive keyword areas. I will be building these sites over the next few weeks and will start monitoring their progress. When I have some initial data I will post it here on Blog Consulting.

Here on Blog Consulting, I recommend using Wordpress as a content management system for our clients. It is a very powerful web tool and it is extremely flexible. Part of that flexibility is due to a huge amount of plugins that are available that allow Wordpress blogs to be set up to do almost any task that comes up. Another great flexibility is the availability of a large number of themes which allow Wordpress to take on a variety of looks. A recent project called for a website to look a certain way and after a lot of research I found the perfect theme for the project, Wordpress Thesis.

The Thesis theme is recommended by a lot of blogging SEO types. I had read about the theme some time ago but never had the occasion to use it before, but with this new project it looked like it would be a perfect fit. So, after reading all the great reviews I purchased the developers version of the theme and got to work. At first, the theme made me feel really stupid. I have been working with Wordpress themes for quite a while and feel very confident when it comes to customizing them to get them to look and act the way I want them to. Thesis has a whole different way of doing things and it was a little overwhelming initially. I kept plugging away at it and over a couple of days it started to make sense. I could see why so many people had given the theme such high praise. I used the theme to build a skydiving website for Skydive Florida Keys. Here is what the Skydive Florida Keys website looks like with the Thesis Wordpress theme in place:

If you have a couple of minutes you should go and see the site in action. It has a nice slideshow running in the middle of the themes that introduces all of the Page options on the site. It also has a nice peel away in the top right corner which opens up encourage people to make a reservation. As far as Thesis goes, I believe it will become my go to Wordpress Theme, but I would suggest that blogging newbies start with some of the other themes that are available. Thesis is awesome, but it does require some previous experience to get it set up. The Thesis people do have an excellent support forum and I got responses to both of my big questions in less than twenty four hours.

I know that I said that Part 8 would probably be the last in this series called Free Blog Consulting, but something happened today that I thought you might be interested in if you have been reading these articles. Today we got our first Google Adsense click on the Cool New Inventions site. If you go back and read the first article in this series you will see how we used keyword research to pick a keyword that got traffic and had some keyword value. We settled on cool inventions and started this site. Today, we are less than a month in on the site and we got a click that was worth $1.23 (One Dollar and twenty-three cents). Here is the report from Google:

Obviously, no one is going to get real excited over $1.23, but the point is that you get to see the process at work. If you were able to get a site that produced enough traffic and enough clicks, you could end up with a pretty decent income stream. What if the site stays about the same and starts getting a steady $1 or $2 dollars a day? Is it worth having? It might be if it doesn’t take a lot of time to maintain. If the site made $45 dollars a month and only took about an hour to maintain every month, it might be worth having. It would take about a month and a half to cover the cost of the domain name and hosting, but then you would have 10 and half months of income or about $500 a year profit for about 10 hours of work. What if you had a hundred sites that produced a $500 dollar a year profit? As long as the 100 sites only needed an hour or less of work a month, then you could effectively make $50,000 a year for about 1000 hours of work. That would be about twenty hours a week, at about fifty dollars an hour. However, there are a lot of ifs, and most people are not willing to do the hard work that would be required to get something like this established. Well, there you go, that will end the Free Blog Consulting series of articles. I hope you find the information useful.

The giants of Reachnor are actually a group of local musicians who have a band called Reach. I just thought that the whole giant thing made for a good title. Anyway, the Reach Band had already purchased their own domain name (www.thebandreach.com) and their own hosting at Godaddy, and then they realized that it might be a good idea to get Optimizer Man on the job. Swinging into action, I got the necessary information to get access to the hosting account and I went and connected it to the domain name and installed Wordpress. Here is what the site looks like now:

I always get a little wave of nostalgia when I see the default Wordpress theme on a brand new site. It is a whole new beginning and I am looking forward to see how the site ends up. What I will be doing on this site is installing some plugins and a new theme. I will then gather some Bio’s and pictures of individual members of the band to put on a page called Bio’s. Then I will add a video page and get a nice video site to work with, either YouTube or Vimeo. I have been using Vimeo primarily because they allow larger video files than YouTube. I will then suggest that the band starts a FaceBook page and I will connect the two so that every time an article is published it will also show up on Facebook. Since a band needs to really work the whole Social Network thing, I will also suggest a Twitter account and I will connect the blog to the Twitter Account so that when the band tweets it will show up on the blog. I will also install a nice little podcast player where the band can post some of their songs and people can either play them on the site or download them into their Ipod or Iphone. I will also be putting up some sort of calender to allow the band to post their schedule so that their fans can see where they are playing.

Underneath all of that, I will lay the SEO foundation for the site so that it will show up for keyword searches for bands in the Florida Keys, bands for hire in the Florida Keys, Florida Keys local bands, etc. Once that is done, the giants of Reachnor should be good to go! I was approached by the owner of the Florida Keys Facial site and asked if I could do anything to help with the site. I was hesitant at first (since I don’t actually have a face) to take on the project, but once I saw the need I realized that I would have to swing into action (think about some really dramatic entrance music here, or even sing to yourself, “Here I come to save the day”!). No project is too big or too small for Optimizer Man, even one that requires a faceless man to give a face lift to a facial site. As long as there are blogs and websites that are not living up to their potential, I will continue to respond to the Contact page. When I first got to the site, this it what it looked like:

It needed more than a Florida Keys Facial. It needed a Florida Keys Facelift. So I went to work. I thought that this would be a good project for you to see how I tackle a project like this so I recorded all my actions in a series of articles. If you are interested in how the Optimizer Man performed the Florida Keys Facelift on the Florida Keys Facial site, check out the following articles:

This will most likely be the last article in the Free Blog Consulting series. These articles were written to give you an idea about the process of starting a blog. We started by doing keyword research, we bought a domain name and then we walked through the process of getting the site hosted and installing Wordpress. From there we added a theme and plugins and pages and posted the first article on the site. The site is now about eighteen days old. I did a Google search this morning for cool new inventions and this was the result:

I also did a check on what the traffic to the site has been over the last week:

In eighteen days the site came from no where and moved to the number 1 Google return. It is very likely that this is temporary, but it is a good sign that over time the site can become the number one return for that search. Our hope from the beginning was to have the site be the number one return for the Google search cool inventions. The site has been showing up in position five for that search. but over time it should be able to work its way up to number one. What it is left for the Cool New Inventions site? We have to build links and add content. One of the ways we will build links is to use article marketing. For our article marketing campaign we will start by writing five articles over the next couple of months that we will distribute for publication on the Internet. I use a service for this provided by Distribute Your Articles. Once I write an article, I submit it to Distribute Your Articles, they check it out for any problems it might have, and they in turn submit the article to hundreds of sites around the Internet. As each of these sites publishes the article, our site gets two links. The potential is for each of these articles to produce hundreds of links for the site. What about duplicate content? I am careful not to post the articles I use for article marketing on my own sites, so any problems that might happen with duplicate content are not my problems. Duplicate content would be an issue for the sites who publish the articles to deal with, but it doesn’t seem to be an issue for those types of sites.

I will continue to add content to the site over the next couple of months to see if I can secure the number one spot on Google for all of our intended keywords. The process that we have followed is the process that many people try and use to make money on the Internet. If you can get the right keyword that pays enough money per click and develop a strong flow of traffic then you could potentially make some money. If you had a bunch of sites like that, you could potentially make a living. The people making the most money are the ones that are selling this information to people who are looking to make money. You, however, found the information for free here on Blog Consulting.

This company has been one of the pioneers in patenting and producing efficient aquaculture tanks and diffusers and also building and developing fish farms all over the world. Since they have been extremely busy over the years, they had neglected their Internet presence and their existing website, which had been put on line in 2001, was in really bad shape. The existing, very old website, did not respond to any keyword searches that would have any practical application in today’s market. So, the question became, what online marketing strategies could I use to provide an effective Internet presence.

I started out by doing some extensive keyword research. I was looking for keywords that would generate some traffic, and also be within our reach in a short period of time. All of the major keyword phrases encompassing fish farms and fish farming are highly competitive and already well represented by websites with high page ranks. I eventually settled on a keyword phrase that received about 1000 exact requests on Google every month and that I believed we could compete in within a few months of getting started. The keyword phrase I selected was Aquaculture Tanks.

My next step was to purchase a suitable domain name and I found that www.aquaculturetanks.net was available, so we purchased it. I then hosted the website (we used Good News Domains for both purchasing the domain name and hosting) and installed WordPress. Since the old website would not be helpful in our online marketing strategies, we simply pointed the old domain name (in case people still used it from old literature, etc.) at the new site.

I added a theme that would allow us to build an attractive site and provide information about aquaculture farming and the services our client can provide. The theme that we are using is in effect a blog, but I set up the blog with a static front page which gives it the appearance of a more traditional website. Here is a look at the final product:

Here is a look at the Google ranking after one month:

Here is a look at the traffic generated over the last six months:
